Success as the sixth Granite Mann Challenge takes place

Granite Mann

The sixth Granite Mann Challenge took place on Sunday 22nd September 2019 at Cringle. Organised by The Children’s Centre and sponsored by Browne Craine & Co, the Granite Mann Challenge is the only off road triathlon in the Isle of Man in which participants can take part either as an individual or as a team.

With the weather holding out for most of the event, competitors got to “enjoy” a 400 metre swim in the reservoir, followed by a 10 kilometre mountain bike ride using the trails around the plantation with the final element being a five kilometre scenic trail run using the tracks in the plantation. The Manx mist and rain came in towards the end of the event but it didn’t stop the competitors finishing. Registration was up on previous years with 20 teams and 37 solo’s entering the race.

The 2019 Granite Mann winners were:

  • Men’s team – Ramsey Reprobates (Ryan Armour, Robbie Turner and Nick Colburn);
  • Ladies team – Manx Masters Swimming Club (Shirley Coop, Carrie Wernham and Alison King);
  • Mixed team – Some Operators (Ryan Fairclough, Andy Bass and Janelle Quayle);
  • Ladies solo – Olivia Newstead; and
  • Men’s solo – William Draper – who won the event for the third year running.

“Congratulations to all the competitors who took part,” said Craig Mitchell, director in Browne Craine & Co. “The course looked difficult but everyone seemed to have so much fun! It was a pleasure to hand out the awards to the worthy winners. I’d also like to say well done to Jane, Lisa and the rest of the fundraising team for organising a great event.  Finally, I’d also like to congratulate my work colleagues Alex Catlow and Lynsey Smith who swam and cycled respectively as part of a participating ladies team, and Danny Foulis and Nick Kelly who both completed their first ever triathlons. Well done guys!”

Browne Craine decided to get involved and support the event because it helps raise money for a fantastic local charity and its staff regularly take part in events which are organised throughout the year by The Children’s Centre. The Children’s Centre and Browne Craine have agreed a three year sponsorship which will see Browne Craine supporting the event until at least 2021.

“Firstly a huge thank you to Browne Craine & Co for sponsoring the event, we are so pleased they have come on board until 2021,” said Jane Howland, Fundraising Officer at The Children’s Centre. “Congratulations to each of the participants, it was tough going but everyone managed to cross the finish line. And finally, thank you to all our marshals and support, we couldn’t have done it without you!”
